Reflection Spy Editing Practical Group of 4

After the editing practical, I felt that my planning fits the assigned brief pretty well, the brief requires us to show the nervous look of Spy A and the calm look of Spy B. I successfully encoded the scared and nervous look of Spy A through a closeup shot and how he was looking around kind of paranoid. For Spy B, I let him wear a jacket and sunglasses. This might encode that Spy B is really experienced and is not nervous, which is the contrast of Spy A. We also planned and filmed many types of shots like an insert shot, medium shot and over shoulder shot, which helped us improve our implementation skills. Instead of just understanding the meaning of each shot, we now know how to take those shots.

Personally, I think our shot list and storyboard did a perfect job at describing and presenting how our short film should be filmed, we added specific time and durations for each of our shots, the angles for each shot and the type of shot are clearly labeled.

During production I was in charge of preparing cosmetics and acting, personally I think I can really improve on my acting since I’m quite inpatient which can ruin a perfect shot. Otherwise I think I did a decent job at acting and for preparing props I need to remember clearer each of the props and find props that are more accurate. I would give myself a score of 3 out of 5 for my role during production. I think that I’ve learned to communicate effectively with my teammates. I often give them suggestions and ask for further instructions while acting. I also think that my team did a great job at time management, we finished recording earlier than the planned time.

The first shot that I’ve chosen is a closeup shot of Spy A’s legs vibrating, which can encode fear or nervousness. I think that the shot has done a good job at highlighting the nervousness but I think the acting could have been better.

The second shot that I chose is an over shoulder shot of Spy A holding up the phone to show the time, this encodes that they might be waiting for the perfect time to do something. We also did an insert shot for this clip.

The third shot that I chose is where the camera tracks Spy A’s legs as he walks towards the bench, this encodes mysteriousness and creates question marks of who is walking towards the bench.

I would try to prepare more props since I think we can do so much better with more props. Another thing I want to improve on is the amount of angles that each scene is filmed at, I would prefer to have many angles for each scene so that the editing stages can have more variety.

Editing Practical Group of 4

Editing practical:

My teacher have given us a general description of a short movie that we're going to make. It's about two spies meeting and delivering files to each other and we have to plan, film and edit the clip.

This is my story board, the scene starts with Spy A walking and sitting down a bench, filmed at a high angle using medium longshot from behind the bench, then Spy B walk into frame and sit down next to Spy A which is filmed at a high angle longshot in front of the bench. The next scene starts with Spy A looking around, it will be filmed from behind both of the spy's head. Then Spy A checks his watch filmed using a overshoulder shot, then a medium shot and central framing to show Spy B giving Spy A the secret files, applying rule of thirds. Spy A stands up and walk away from the bench leaving Spy B alone, filmed with medium shot from behind the bench, applying rule of thirds. Spy B sit still for a bit before looking around, filmed at medium shot, a close up of Spy B's face to show that Spy B is nervous which might encode that it is the Spy first mission and he lets out a big sigh. Spy B sitting on the bench then stand up and walk away, filmed behind a bush which can encode that someone is looking at Spy B, apply rule of thirds. While Spy B is walking away, the camera zoom in behind his head and when Spy B turns around then two hands appear which certifies the theory that Spy B is being followed.

This is my shot list which shows the detail of every shot and the duration of each shot.
As a group, we've decided that we will plan the short film by sharing our ideas and mixing our ideas together. Here is a few images of our story board.

So in the opening shot, we've decided with Emma's story board which is the camera track Spy A and zoom in their footstep.
This is Frank's story board and we choose 3 scenes from his story board. Spy A is looking around and fidgeting his hand and vibrating his leg using close up.

We also planned our production schedule and risks assessment.
Schedule:
Risks Assessment:

Reflection: During this whole project, I have learned alot of tips and tricks on how to set up camera for certain shots, I also got a chance to improve my acting skills. I also know how to write a risk assessment and schedule but overall I have improve on the team work department, always finishing my assigned work.

Camera work practical:

This is a establishing shot of our school. Establishing shot is a shot to show the viewers where the event is taking place. This is the front side of the school, I tried finding a spot that will show us the name of our school clearer but this is the best spot that I can find from the available range.

This is our Medium Long Shot. It is a shot where you can see more of the setting which provide context and the body language of the character. I used my friend as the main subject of this picture, where we can see his whole body and part of the environment around him. I also applied rule of thirds and put my friend on the intersect in the low corner.

This is our Medium Closeup. Medium Closeup is a shot that allows viewers to see most of the torso which can highlight facial expressions and detail of the body language. My friend is the main subject for this picture, I applied central framing so that his emotion is more clearer to see and to show the white background.

This is our Long Shot. Long shot is a shot that can show the full character and we get to see more and more of the setting/environment. My friend is agian the subject of this picture, where I still applied central framing, the long shot will show his full body and alot of the background.

This is our Extreme Closeup Shot. This shot a shot that is really close to the subject, used to highlight important detail or emotional state. The extreme closeup shot of my friend is aimed at his eyes to show and highlight his suspicious look.

This is our dutchshot or tilted angle. It is a shot in which the camera has been rotated around the axis of the lens and relative to the horizon or vertical lines in the shot. The Tilted angle is used to cause a sense of unease or disorientation for the viewer. This dutch angle is inspired by the album cover forrap album "Damn" where we decided to take it at a tilted angle.

This is our Over shoulder. This shot is a camera angle where the camera is placed above the back of the shoulder and head of a subject. This shot is most commonly used to present conversational back and forth between two subjects. This overshoulder shot show the audience what the character is looking at from a side view.

This is our POV Shot. that is shot as if through the eyes of a character. It is used to show a characters reaction or what they’re seeing. This POV shot show us the view of my friend working on a document, we also tilted the camera a bit to show that his head is tilting.

This is our Two Shot. This is a shot with two characters in the same frame to show the relationship between the characters. I applied rule of thirds and try placing my friends on two sides of the frame.

This is our Medium Close up. It is a shot where it frames the subject from just above the head to just below the chest. We applied central framing for this one, we can also zoom it out a bit so that it is more of a MCU than a CU.

This is our high angle. High angle is a technique where the camera is positioned above the subject and looks down.

Camera movements practical

We made a video using vertical pan, horizontal pan, tracking shot/ dolly shot, zoom in/out and 360 shot on the dragon plushie.

CCR Q3: How did your production skills develop throughout this project?

This is my answer to question 3 of Creative critical reflection "How did your production skills develop throughout this project?"...
